Denmark

Denmark won the European Championships back in 1992 in Sweden but have since then struggled somewhat, their best European Championships performance since then being a quarter final appearance in 2004. They then blotted their copybook by failing to qualify for Euro 2008 and they didn't look a strong side at the World Cup 2010.

It is therefore a little surprising that Denmark then won their qualifying group for Euro 2012, coming above one of the more fancied teams in Portugal. That suggests Denmark have improved but they will need to keep that improvement up if they are to play a part in the latter stages.

Denmark To Be Eliminated In The Group Stage

Denmark have a reputation as a traditionally strong nation at these sorts of tournaments but two failures to qualify from the group in the last four European Championships and one failure to even get this far suggests they are on the decline and although they did well to win their group they face an almost impossible task against not only two of the three favourites to win Euro 2012 (Germany and Holland) but also Portugal as well.

Denmark To Finish Bottom Of Group B

Denmark finished above Portugal in qualifying but Portugal often fail to fire in qualifying and improve at the major tournaments, especially when raising their game against the better teams. Portugal look more capable of getting results against Germany or Holland, they needed to the playoffs to get to the last World Cup but still drew with Brazil at the group stage and qualified from that group of death before being beaten narrowly by Spain in the knockout rounds. Denmark were eliminated at the group stage in the same tournament and there is certainly a strong case for Denmark finishing below Portugal and bottom of Group B.

Denmark To Gain 0-1 Points In Group B

Holland played Denmark in the group stage of the last World Cup and Holland won that game very comfortably so it is difficult to see Denmark turning the tables on Holland. Spain are even better than Holland, as we saw at the World Cup, and it would be a major surprise if Denmark got anything from those two games. That leaves Portugal, who beat Denmark 3-1 early in qualifying before Denmark beat Portugal 2-1 in the last game of qualifying. that shows this game could go either way but with Portugal expected to improve at the finals a draw might be Denmark's only hope of getting a point.

Dennis Rommedahl To Be Denmark's Top Scorer

It was a slight surprise that Dennis Rommedahl was Denmark's biggest goal threat at the last World Cup but he backed that up by finishing just one goal behind Nicklas Bendtner in qualifying. Denmark don't score many goals and don't have an outstanding goalscorer and in a group where they might score very few goals Dennis Rommedahl has as good a chance as any of being the team's top scorer, especially as it might even only take one goal.

Denmark did extremely well to qualify as winners from a very tough group that involved not only Portugal, who are one of the favourites for Euro 2012, but also Norway who are a very solid team. Denmark had a strong record with six wins, one draw and one loss and considering the loss was away to Portugal (probably the best team in the group) and the draw was away to Norway (the next best team) then Denmark can certainly be forgiven those dropped points. Things will be much tougher once again at Euro 2012 though.

Denmark Player's Goal Stats

Here are the most important goal stats from Denmark's Euro 2012 qualifying group. Use these to pick the best goalscorer bets on Denmark's games at Euro 2012.

Player Games (Sub) Goals Games Scored In First Goals Last Goals Hat Tricks Pens Scored
Nicklas Bendtner 5 3 2 1 1 0 0
Dennis Rommedahl 8 3 2 1 0 0 0
Michael Krohn-Dehli 7 2 2 1 0 0 0

*All stats reflect bookies rules for own goals and 90 mins play in their respective markets. Six other Denmark players scored a single goal in qualification and there was also an own goal.

Denmark don't score a huge amount of goals and the goals that they do score are normally quite evenly spread throughout the team. Nicklas Bendtner and Dennis Rommedahl were Denmark's top scorer's in qualifying with three goals each and both players scored in just two different games and scored one first goal, although Bendtner also has a last goal to his name. It is likely to be between the pair for Denmark's top scorer at Euro 2012.

Denmark Players' Disciplinary Stats

Check out Denmark's yellow and red card stats here below to help highlight the best bets in the cards markets for Denmark's Euro 2012 matches.

Player Games (Sub) Yellow Cards First Yellow Card Of Game Red Cards
Michael Silberbauer 3 (2) 2 1 0
Simon Kjaer 7 1 1 0
Morten Skuobo 0 (1) 1 0 0
Nicklas Pedersen 3 (1) 1 0 0
Lars Jacobsen 8 1 1 0
Niki Zimling 4 1 0 0
Andreas Bjelland 2 1 1 0
Dennis Rommedahl 1 1 0

Denmark had an unremarkable disciplinary record from qualifying, they picked up nine bookings in their eight games and only one player gained more than booking and that was Michael Silberbauer, who seemed equally as good at picking up bookings when coming off the bench as when he started games, he looks likely to be going into the referee's notebooks again at Euro 2012. Over half of the bookings picked up by Denmark players were the first bookings of the game which is something to consider in the first booking markets.

Denmark were fairly low scorers in their group, even considering the fact that they played eight games rather than ten. They also conceded a relatively high amount but it is worth noting that Portugal (a very good side) scored four of the six goals that Denmark conceded.

Denmark weren't markedly better in attack or defence from one half to another during their qualifying campaign but it is worth noting that in all but one game Denmark failed to score in at least one of the halves, so if they have scored in the first half at Euro 2012 that is probably them done with from an attacking point of view.

Denmark were drawing three of their games at half time and winning four, against better opposition in the finals the number of draws is likely to go up slightly so expect Denmark's most common half time result to be the draw. If it's a score a draw that could be bad news for Denmark with goals in both halves for them unlikely meaning they'll often have to keep a clean sheet in the second half just to draw the game.

Denmark Recent European Championships Performances

Year Team Performance
2008 Did Not Qualify
2004 Eliminated In Quarter Final
2000 Eliminated Bottom Of Group
1996 Eliminated third In Group

Although Denmark's recent attempts at the European Championships are nothing to brag about it is worth noting that they won the competition back in 1992, just before it opened up to sixteen teams. Denmark then qualified for the finals on the next three occasions, being eliminated at the group stage twice and in the quarter finals once before eventually not qualifying for the finals in 2008. Denmark are back in the big time but look more likely to match their performances from 1996 and 2000 rather than from 1992.
