England have not enjoyed their football in recent years, following their failure to qualify for Euro 2008 they then flopped at the most recent World Cup and they will need a big performance to win back the fans and to justify their odds. We should see a few younger faces in their Euro 2012 squad and that freshening up of the squad should bring about some improvement.
England are in a slightly odd position with the fans and players already knowing that manager Fabio Capello will be leaving his position at the end of the tournament, will Capello's reign as England manager finish on a massive high or will his tenure be remembered as a huge failure?
Here are the best bets on England at Euro 2012 in the most popular betting markets:
Group D looks very much between England and France and with France having failed miserably in their last two major tournament groups England look the more reliable betting proposition here. England have been very consistent recently under Fabio Capello and are undeniably tough to beat, England were one of just five teams to go unbeaten in qualifying and presuming England can avoid defeat against France they should be able to win the group.
Should England win their group as expected they would most likely play Italy in the Quarter Finals. Italy are rated slightly worse than France by the bookies and since Italy managed to perform even worse than France at the most recent World Cup it is easy to see why. If England can get past France then they can certainly get past Italy and into the Semi Finals. England's Semi Final opponents would then most likely be Germany who beat England comfortably at the World Cup and look a class above England. It would be a major surprise if England can overcome Germany so the Semi Final should be as far as England get.
England should have few problems beating Ukraine and Sweden in Group D, Ukraine may be the hosts but they have never qualified for the European Championships before so clearly aren't one of the better teams in Europe. Meanwhile England have recently beaten Sweden who failed to win their qualifying group. The real test comes against France who have a poor recent record at major tournaments but are a decent side in their own right. France only conceded four goals in qualifying and could be tough to beat in this group match and the draw appeals as the most likely result in that match which would give England seven points.
Wayne Rooney is going to be suspended for two matches at Euro 2012 but is expected to start the games after that meaning he'll probably play three matches. He and Darren Bent (the most likely starter in place of Rooney in the first two matches) should both chip in with goals but the fact they won't play all the games limits their potential. This could hand the initiative to Ashley Young, who is likely to play in all England matches and was England's joint top scorer in qualifying. It may only take two or three goals to be England's top scorer and Young is able to chip in with that sort of figure.

England were one of just five teams to go through Euro 2012 without being beaten and they actually had a better record away from home than at Wembley, they drew two games at home and only one away from home. England also had a better goal difference when playing away from and these are good signs for their chances at Euro 2012, where every game will be an away match for England.
This is the predicted 23 man England Euro 2012 squad, when the final squad is announced the squad will be updated:

England spread the goals around in Euro 2012 qualifying with six players scoring either two or three goals. Traditionally England have looked to Wayne Rooney for the bulk of their goals and he was the joint top scorer in qualifying but he will be suspended for the three group games, a time during which Darren Bent could be relied upon for goals and he could be a decent bet to get more goals than his team mates at Euro 2012 as he scored in three games despite starting just three games and coming on as sub once.
Bent and Ashley Young were England's most common last goalscorers whilst Young was also the most common first goalscorer for England in qualifying, Young is often a pretty fair price in the goalscorer markets and he may offer some value against the majority of his team mates.

| Jack Wilshere | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Scott Parker | 4 (1) | 1 | 1 | 0 |
England are a team that pick up plenty of yellow cards due to their physical playing style, they gained twelve cards during qualifying and one red card and the worst offenders were Wayne Rooney and James Milner. Rooney picked up two yellow cards and then a straight red card in his final game which means he is now suspended for the group stage.
In Rooney's absence James Milner looks a good bet to get more yellow cards than his team mates, Milner works very hard but his willingness to track back from midfield often sees the Man City player pick up more than his fair share of bookings.

England's games were mostly close matches without any massive scorelines during qualifying. England had an unremarkable record of scoring just six first and last goals, fairly low considering they won the group. They did have a habit of shipping the odd goal, England kept just five clean sheets from their eight games.
England were much better from an attacking point of view in the first half of matches with eleven first half goals compared to just six second half goals. Considering England scored three in the second half of their first game of qualifying against Bulgaria that means England scored just three second half goals in their remaining seven matches which is very low. England failed to score in both halves in five of their eight matches.
England had a pretty good half time record, holding the lead at the half way point in six games from eight, but they only won both halves of two matches suggesting a bit of complacency sets in when England go in with a half time lead.
| Year | Team Performance |
|---|---|
| 2008 | Did Not Qualify |
| 2004 | Eliminated In Quarter Finals |
| 2000 | Eliminated Third In Group |
| 1996 | Eliminated In Semi Finals |
England have a very mixed record in recent European Championships, from four attempts they have managed to do as well as reaching the semi finals and as badly as not even qualifying for the tournament itself. When they have qualified they have gone out in the group once, been eliminated in the quarter finals and been eliminated in the semi finals. The latter result came when hosting the competition back in 1996.
