This has to be one of the most highly anticipated group matches of Euro 2012 and it is easy to see why with the runners up from Euro 2008 taking on the runners up from Euro 2004.
Germany are the second favourites to win Euro 2012 and arguably play the most exciting football out of all the teams at Euro 2012 whilst Portugal are also an attacking side. A loss for either side will be a huge dent to their qualification hopes.

BACK GERMANY TO BEAT PORTUGAL
Germany are a scary side, they have an amazing attacking threat and won all ten Euro 2012 qualifying matches (the only team to win ten). It took world champions Spain to knock them out of the World Cup in the Semi Final and it also took Spain to knock them out of Euro 2008 in the Semi Final and they are simply a very good side. Portugal seem to do better aqainst the better teams but at the end of the day they failed to win four out of ten qualifiers and didn't play a team near the class of Germany. The fact that on paper this is such a competitive match just makes Germany even better value.

BACK GERMANY -0.5
Germany are not a certainty to win this matchcomfortably enough for this bet to be a winner but Germany are a lot more consistent than Portugal so it seems easier to rely on Portugal underperforming than playing up to their best. If Portugal don't bring their best game they could find themselves on the end of a hiding with Germany's attacking talents so it could be worth a small bet on Germany -0.5.

BACK 2-1 GERMANY AND OVER 2.5 GOALS
Both of these teams have traditions of being attacking sides and this was reflected in qualifying with both teams scoring and conceding a relatively large amount of goals. Nine of Germany's ten qualifiers had over 2.5 goals whilst seven of Portugal's had over 2.5 goals. The teams scored a combined 61 goals in ten games and over 2.5 goals looks extremely likely. As for the scoreline, Germany only kept four clean sheets in qualifying despite dominating their group and they conceded exactly one goal in half of their matches. Portugal conceded on average 1.4 goals a game in qualifying and they didn't play anyone as strong as Germany so Germany should score at least two goals. If Germany are 2-1 they may be wary of looking for a third knowing what a big win this could be so 2-1 looks the most likely of the scorelines.

Germany v Portugal Team News
Team news will be added closer to kick off.
BACK MARIO GOMEZ TO SCORE ANYTIME AGAINST PORTUGAL
It's entirely possible Portugal could score the first goal in this match as we expect them to score so backing in the anytime goalscorer betting looks safer than trying to pick the first goalscorer. Presuming Mario Gomez gets the nod to start up front over Miroslav Klose he looks the most likely player on the pitch to score in this match, in qualifying Gomez started just four matches and made a further two substitute's appearances but still found time to score six goals in five different matches. Gomez is great in the six yard box and will take the majoroty of chances that go his way and it's hard to not see him getting at least a few chances in this match.

BACK DRAW/GERMANY IN THE HALF TIME/FULL TIME BETTING
If both teams are going to score and Germany are going to win there is a great chance that this game will be a draw at half time before Germany win it at full time. The half time score can be 0-0 or 1-1 at half time and since Germany were still drawing two qualifying matches at half time against much weaker opposition it is not difficult to see them drawing this game at half time, especially as Portugal were drawing three of their matches at half time in qualifying. Germany scored 20 second half goals in qualifying compared to 14 first half goals so it will be no surprise to see them go on and win the game if the match is all square at half time.
Germany v Portugal Best Bet
Not many first round matches in the group stage will have over 2.5 goals but not many will feature two of the highest scoring qualifiers and with 61 goals between them in qualifying it is difficult to see there being fewer than three goals in this match. There will be masses of attacking talent on the pitch and this game could even end up over 3.5 goals but over 2.5 goals looks a safe enough bet at decent odds.
