The Player Of The Tournament Award is very likely to go to a player who reaches at least the semi final as four games isn’t really enough to show what you are made of at a major international tournament.

This means it is best to start off with teams that are most likely to make up the semi finals. Given the draw the most probably semi finalists according to the bookies and our own predictions are Portugal, Germany, Spain and Italy.

So who are each team’s main contenders?

Portugal

Only one player in with a shout here, Cristiano Ronaldo. He has bags of skill and the end product to match. You don’t score 30+ goals every season unless you are exceptional and with showboating likely at every opportunity he won’t fail to catch viewers’ attentions.

Germany don’t really have one exceptional player and we will see closer to the time who the star player is for the Germans.

Spain

Any one of Spain's attacking players could end up as players of the tournament, Cesc Fabregas, Andres Iniesta, David Silva, Xavi, David Villa or Fernando Torres.

Italy

Italy are a defensive side so look at their defence, defensive midfielders and their goalkeeper for the most likely players to win the player of the tournament.

England

England play with their hearts on their sleeves and no one sums up their fighting spirit more than Wayne Rooney. He works extremely hard, scores goals and creates them and he looks a decent bet from the England squad.

The Verdict

So which of these do we pick? Ronaldo will be a popular choice but unless Portugal over perform he may not have enough games to show off his talents. Spain are a solid choice to produce the player of the tournament as their style of play is so easy on the eye but not having one star player may count against them. Wayne Rooney always stands out for England and we fancy England to do well at Euro 2012 so back Wayne Rooney to be the player of the tournament.
